This combined project contributes to the financing of a certified climate project and additionally supports nature conservation in Germany. For every tonne of CO₂ saved through the contribution via a certified climate project, a financial contribution flows into measures that protect forest ecosystems in the Thuringian Slate Mountains. There we restore intensively used forests to their natural state, create mixed forests, increase the proportion of deadwood, install nesting boxes, and much more. In this way, we improve the habitats for animal species that have become rare, such as capercaillie and fire salamander.

Currently, the nature conservation is combined with a certified improved cookstoves project in Nigeria (climatepartner.com/1267). This climate project provides improved cookstoves, supports women and relieves the financial burden on families.

"Species such as the wildcat, lynx, black stork, and beetles that depend on deadwood are highly endangered in Germany’s forests. Supporting nature conservation projects is therefore of great importance. Forests are home to a wide variety of plants and animals that are essential for a healthy ecosystem. Targeted conservation efforts can protect and restore habitats, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity. In addition, healthy forests enhance ecological stability, improve water quality, and provide valuable recreational spaces for the population. Investment in nature conservation is thus vital to maintain ecological balance and safeguard natural resources for future generations."

Our additional commitment: a financial contribution for every tonne of carbon reduced

With our combined project, we combine verified emission reductions through a certified climate project with an additional commitment to regional nature conservation. European ecosystems are also affected by climate change. Our regional nature conservation initiatives are therefore committed to preserving or restoring natural habitats and adapting them to climatic changes.

Possible project activities include the protection and conversion of native forests, the conservation of animal and plant biodiversity, peatland restoration, or the conversion of agricultural land. The certified climate project is registered with international standards.

The project aims to contribute to these United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Project facts

Climate projects generally fall into one of three groups: carbon reduction, carbon removal, or carbon avoidance. Carbon reduction projects reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced by a specific activity (e.g., improved cookstoves). Carbon removal projects remove carbon from the atmosphere by sequestering it in carbon sinks (e.g., reforestation). Carbon avoidance projects avoid greenhouse gas emissions entering the atmosphere (e.g., protecting forests from deforestation with REDD+ projects).

Climate projects demonstrably reduce, remove, or avoid greenhouse gas emissions. This is achieved with various technologies, ranging from nature-based solutions to social impact projects and renewable energies.
