Ocean winds generate clean energy
Namibia is located in southwest Africa bordering the south Atlantic Ocean. Many regions of the country offer potential for renewable energy generation. It is key to use this, as the energy demand of the country is increasing.
This is done for example in the area around Lüderitz in the Southwest: Three wind turbines with a total capacity of six megawatts generate green electricity, which is fed into the Namibian power grid facilitated by Namibia Power Corporation, the national power utility company. Two more wind turbines will be installed later to also supply electricity directly to the municipality of Lüderitz.
The project not only helps to improve Namibia’s energy self-sufficiency but also replaces a share of energy generated from fossil fuels in the electricity mix. This leads to savings of about 32,460 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Additionally, the project creates jobs and upgrades existing roads contributing to a better infrastructure of the region. The project might also pave the way for further green energy plants.

As the name suggests, wind turbines use the power of the wind to generate energy. During this process, a generator located inside the wind turbine converts kinetic energy into electrical energy. As energy is still mainly generated from fossil fuels in many areas around the world, clean wind energy can replace some of this fossil, high-emission energy and verifiably save CO2 emissions.
In most cases, the sustainably generated electricity from the wind power projects is fed into a regional power grid, which diversifies the power supply and improves energy security in regions that are frequently affected by power shortages and outages. A project often creates increased job opportunities for the local population and the area can be used for additional activities, such as agriculture. Wind power projects make an important contribution to a clean energy supply worldwide and contribute to sustainable development with respect to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
