Reforestation, forest protection and tree plantingGet to know the project

With this combined project, we contribute to the financing of two certified climate projects while additionally supporting tree planting in Germany. For every tonne of CO₂ saved through a certified climate project, we plant one tree in Germany. In this way, we promote the transformation of structurally poor forests and monocultures into more resilient mixed forests that are better adapted to changing climate conditions.

Combined projects

  • Forest protection, Brazil: The forest protection project in Lábrea, Brazil, safeguards 99,035 hectares of Amazon rainforest, home to a rich diversity of plant and animal species (climatepartner.com/1475).

  • Reforestation, Nicaragua: The reforestation project in Nicaragua has restored 2,361 hectares with over one million native bamboo plants and also protects an additional 1,000 hectares of old-growth forest (climatepartner.com/1216).

"Forests are increasingly affected by the impacts of climate change — with only one in five trees considered healthy. Yet they play a vital role in climate change mitigation: absorbing carbon, safeguarding biodiversity, and acting as natural climate regulators. By reforesting damaged areas with climate-resilient, site-appropriate tree species and promoting sustainable forest management, we can boost carbon storage and strengthen forest resilience to extreme weather events. In doing so, reforestation makes a meaningful contribution to both environmental preservation and global climate protection."

Our commitment to climate action: One tree planted for every Ton of carbon reduced

With our combined project, we link verified emission reductions from certified climate projects with additional local engagement. Climate change is increasingly noticeable in Europe as well: tree species such as spruce suffer from drought because their shallow roots cannot reach deeper, water-retaining soil layers, leaving them weakened and particularly vulnerable to pests. Storms also take a heavy toll on these shallow-rooted species.

Our initiative addresses this issue by supporting reforestation and the transformation of forests into more resilient mixed woodlands: for every ton of CO2 saved through contributions to the certified forest protection project in Brazil or the reforestation project in Nicaragua, we plant one tree in Germany. In this way, we help our forests adapt to climate change. The tree planting is carried out in collaboration with the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald (SDW), which brings years of extensive expertise. In addition, we offer our customers the opportunity to participate in the planting activities. The certified climate project is registered under international standards.

The project aims to contribute to these United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Project facts

Climate projects generally fall into one of three groups: carbon reduction, carbon removal, or carbon avoidance. Carbon reduction projects reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced by a specific activity (e.g., improved cookstoves). Carbon removal projects remove carbon from the atmosphere by sequestering it in carbon sinks (e.g., reforestation). Carbon avoidance projects avoid greenhouse gas emissions entering the atmosphere (e.g., protecting forests from deforestation with REDD+ projects).

Climate projects demonstrably reduce, remove, or avoid greenhouse gas emissions. This is achieved with various technologies, ranging from nature-based solutions to social impact projects and renewable energies.

What’s a combined project?

With combined projects, ClimatePartner brings together funding for international, certified climate projects with additional support for nature conservation projects.
