This combined project contributes to the financing of a certified climate project while additionally supporting tree planting in Germany. For every tonne of CO₂ additionally and regionally sequestered through the Klimawald MUC, another tonne of CO₂ is saved through a certified international climate project. In this way, we promote the transformation of structurally poor forests and monocultures into more resilient mixed forests that are better adapted to changing climate conditions.

The Klimawald MUC project is combined with a certified hydropower project in Bugoye, Uganda (climatepartner.com/1227). The project in Uganda increases the share of electricity generated from renewable sources and contributes to greater energy security in the region. The operation of the facility also creates new jobs for the local population.

Unser Zusatzengagement: CO2-Bindung durch den Klimawald MUC

Mit unserem Kombiprojekt verbinden wir verifizierte Emissionsreduktionen durch ein zertifiziertes Klimaschutzprojekt mit zusätzlichem Engagement. Denn auch in Europa ist der Klimawandel spürbar: Baumarten wie die Fichte leiden unter Dürre, weil sie mit ihren flachen Wurzeln keine tieferen, wasserhaltigen Erdschichten erreichen und dadurch geschwächt und besonders anfällig für Schädlingsbefall werden. Deshalb setzen sich die Forstexpert:innen im Klimawald MUC für einen stabileren und zukunftssicheren Waldbau ein. Aus Monokulturen entstehen artenreichere Mischwälder, die besser an das Klima angepasst sind. Diese können der Atmosphäre langfristig mehr CO2 entnehmen als herkömmliche Wirtschaftswälder.

Die Flächen für den Klimawald MUC stellt die Gräflich von Arco’sche Forstverwaltung zur Verfügung. Die fünf Projektstandorte im tertiären Hügelland und in den Flussauen Niederbayerns liegen in den Landkreisen Regensburg, Rottal-Inn, Deggendorf, Dingolfing-Landau und Landshut. Das Projektgebiet wird eine Fläche von rund 1.900 Hektar umfassen. Das zertifizierte Klimaschutzprojekt ist bei internationalen Standards registriert.

Project facts

Climate projects generally fall into one of three groups: carbon reduction, carbon removal, or carbon avoidance. Carbon reduction projects reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced by a specific activity (e.g., improved cookstoves). Carbon removal projects remove carbon from the atmosphere by sequestering it in carbon sinks (e.g., reforestation). Carbon avoidance projects avoid greenhouse gas emissions entering the atmosphere (e.g., protecting forests from deforestation with REDD+ projects).

Climate projects demonstrably reduce, remove, or avoid greenhouse gas emissions. This is achieved with various technologies, ranging from nature-based solutions to social impact projects and renewable energies.
